[教材分析 Analysis of the Teaching Material]
Lesson 97, Unit 25, namely 2 dialogue texts, mainly deals with expressions in phone calls and those related to them. On the one hand, attention must be paid to the use of them, on the other hand, practice of them is of fatal importance. A good mastering of this lesson is very helpful for the study of Lesson 98 and 99.

Students in Class 3, Senior 1 is poor in English study. The students are below the general level, which calls for close attention and hence the teaching should be well aware of this.

Step 1 Revision & Presentation
Revise phone call expressions and introduce into today’s topic:
“Hello. Is that Mr. Johnson speaking?” “Yes, this is Johnson speaking.” “Could I speak to Jim, please?” “Hold on, please. Jim, you are wanted on the phone.” (make some gestures if necessary)
Today, we are going to learn Lesson 97, Unit 25, one of the 2 dialogues of which is also a phone call.
Step 2 Preparation for the Dialogues
Summarize the main idea of the two dialogues and present the new words and expressions in today’s lecture:
a.m. p.m. send out get through ring back repeat

“Could I speak to …, please?”, “Can you ask … to ring me back, please?”, “Hold on, please.”, etc.
Get the students to read the words and expressions after the computer.
Step 3 Listening
Present the comprehensive questions for the students to answer before they listen to the listening material:
Dialogue 1:
1. How many people are coming to the conference? (Over 200.)
2. Why do they need the buses? (To meet people at the station.)
3. At what time will they need the 2 buses? (At 6 p.m. on the 26th.)
Dialogue 2:
1. What happens when Mary rings the bus company? (She can’t speak to Pat, the one wanted on the phone.)
2. Is Pat in the office? (No.)
3. What does Mary want Pat to do? (To ring her back.)
4. What’s Mary’s number? (6674044.)
Get the students to listen to the material and answer the questions.
Step 4 Dialogue
Deal with the main linguistic points in this lesson:
1. What a lot of invitations to send out!
感嘆句的構(gòu)成:What + n. (…)!; How + adj./adv. (…)!
What a lovely day (it is)!
How lovely the girl is!
2. must: 情態(tài)動(dòng)詞表示推測,后接do表示對現(xiàn)在情況的推測,后接have done表示對過去情況的推測;只用于肯定句中,否定句、疑問句中用can’t。
It must be a “D”.
They must have been to Beijing.
He was doing homework just now. He can’t have been there.
3. a.m. = before 12 noon; p.m. = after 12 noon
4. on the 26th: 雙方都知道月份,因此省略了
5. get through: 接通(電話、線路)
I tried to ring you, but I couldn’t get through.
6. The line is busy.
7. hold on: (打電話)別掛機(jī),不掛斷
8. take a message: 捎個(gè)話;leave a message: 留個(gè)話
9. ring (sb.) back
10. make up a dialogue

Step 5 Practice-Role Play
Divide the students into groups of 2 to practice the 2 dialogues.
Get a few pairs to act the dialogues out.
Step 6 Consolidation
Make up a dialogue using part 3 as a guide.
Get 1 or 2 pairs to act it out.
Step 7 Workbook
Get the students to do WB Ex.1 & 3 respectively, check the answers with the students, and then get 2 students to act out Ex.1.
Homework
Finish Ex.4 after class.
