撐著油紙傘，獨(dú)自彷徨在悠長(zhǎng)，悠長(zhǎng)又寂寥的雨巷，我希望逢著一個(gè)丁香一樣的，結(jié)著愁怨的姑娘。
她是有丁香一樣的顏色，丁香一樣的芬芳，丁香一樣的憂愁，在雨中哀怨，哀怨又彷徨；她彷徨在這寂寥的雨巷，撐著油紙傘，詩(shī)人眼中的丁香姑娘，像我一樣，像我一樣地默默彳亍（chì chù）著，冷漠，凄清，又惆悵。
她靜默地走近，走近，又投出，太息（“太”通“嘆”，太息就是嘆息的意思）一般的眼光。
她飄過(guò)像夢(mèng)一般的，像夢(mèng)一般的凄婉迷茫。像夢(mèng)中飄過(guò)一枝丁香的，我身旁飄過(guò)這女郎；她靜默地遠(yuǎn)了，遠(yuǎn)了，到了頹圮(pǐ)的籬墻，走盡這雨巷。
在雨的哀曲里，消了她的顏色，散了她的芬芳，消散了，甚至她的太息般的眼光，丁香般的惆悵。

《雨巷》1927年夏天，寫成后差不多一年，作者將它投寄到《小說(shuō)月報(bào)》。當(dāng)時(shí)代理《小說(shuō)月報(bào)》編輯的葉圣陶一看到這首詩(shī)就非常喜歡，稱它“替新詩(shī)的音節(jié)開了一個(gè)新的紀(jì)元”，并送給作者“雨巷詩(shī)人”的稱號(hào)。這一年，作者才22歲。
一首好的抒情詩(shī)，應(yīng)該是藝術(shù)美的結(jié)晶。它會(huì)超越時(shí)間和空間的限制而喚起人們審美的感情。然而多年來(lái)，《雨巷》和戴望舒的其他一些詩(shī)作，卻被視為象征派和現(xiàn)代派的無(wú)病呻吟而排斥在文學(xué)史的視野外；多年以后，人們才像觀賞出土文物一樣，把這些作品從遺忘的塵土中挖掘出來(lái)，又重新看到了它們身上的藝術(shù)光輝。
