And so when I moved to New York City after college and got completely sucker-punched in the face by depression, I did the only thing I could think of at the time. I wrote those same kinds of letters that my mother had written me for strangers, and tucked them all throughout the city, dozens and dozens of them. I left them everywhere, in cafes and in libraries, at the U.N., everywhere. I blogged about those letters and the days when they were necessary, and I posed a kind of crazy promise to the Internet: that if you asked me for a hand-written letter, I would write you one, no questions asked. Overnight, my inbox morphed into this harbor of heartbreak -- a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied in rural Kansas, all asking me, a 22-year-old girl who barely even knew her own coffee order, to write them a love letter and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox.
Well, today I fuel a global organization that is fueled by those trips to the mailbox, fueled by the ways in which we can harness social media like never before to write and mail strangers letters when they need them most, but most of all, fueled by crates of mail like this one, my trusty mail crate, filled with the scriptings of ordinary people, strangers writing letters to other strangers not because they're ever going to meet and laugh over a cup of coffee, but because they have found one another by way of letter-writing.
But, you know, the thing that always gets me about these letters is that most of them have been written by people that have never known themselves loved on a piece of paper. They could not tell you about the ink of their own love letters. They're the ones from my generation, the ones of us that have grown up into a world where everything is paperless, and where some of our best conversations have happened upon a screen. We have learned to diary our pain onto Facebook, and we speak swiftly in 140 characters or less.
But what if it's not about efficiency this time? I was on the subway yesterday with this mail crate, which is a conversation starter, let me tell you. If you ever need one, just carry one of these. (Laughter) And a man just stared at me, and he was like, "Well, why don't you use the Internet?" And I thought, "Well, sir, I am not a strategist, nor am I specialist. I am merely a storyteller." And so I could tell you about a woman whose husband has just come home from Afghanistan, and she is having a hard time unearthing this thing called conversation, and so she tucks love letters throughout the house as a way to say, "Come back to me. Find me when you can." Or a girl who decides that she is going to leave love letters around her campus in Dubuque, Iowa, only to find her efforts ripple-effected the next day when she walks out onto the quad and finds love letters hanging from the trees, tucked in the bushes and the benches. Or the man who decides that he is going to take his life, uses Facebook as a way to say goodbye to friends and family. Well, tonight he sleeps safely with a stack of letters just like this one tucked beneath his pillow, scripted by strangers who were there for him when.
These are the kinds of stories that convinced me that letter-writing will never again need to flip back her hair and talk about efficiency, because she is an art form now, all the parts of her, the signing, the scripting, the mailing, the doodles in the margins. The mere fact that somebody would even just sit down, pull out a piece of paper and think about someone the whole way through, with an intention that is so much harder to unearth when the browser is up and the iPhone is pinging and we've got six conversations rolling in at once, that is an art form that does not fall down to the Goliath of "get faster," no matter how many social networks we might join. Today I would like to begin with a story. There was once a physical therapist who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a census about mountain gorillas. These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of poaching and being put into the zoo. She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled their babies.
Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs. Diana Fossey, who spent most of her lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.
To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.
Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur - natural scenes aren't natural anymore. Deforestation to heat lodges are devastating Nepal. Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica. Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks.
All these appalling facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been eroding our resources. Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 20xx the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.
Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations are receiving donations - big notes, small notes or even coins - from housewives, plumbers, ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and invalids. Some of them cannot afford to send the money but they do. These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. Why? Because they care. Because they still want their Mother Nature back. Because they know it still belongs to them.
This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it , it's all coming from a scene to be remembered, a scene to recall and to cherish.
The other night, as I saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to something else, someplace else, a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seemed to have been except the deer.
And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's time for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.
Once again, I have come to think of Mrs. Diana Fossey because it is with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world.
And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our minds, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

在我心中，有許許多多的、多姿多彩的中國(guó)夢(mèng)。這些夢(mèng)，曾經(jīng)讓我心潮澎湃，曾經(jīng)讓我熱血沸騰，曾經(jīng)讓我心馳神往。無(wú)時(shí)無(wú)刻，我都在為國(guó)家美好的未來憧憬著。但是，我清楚地認(rèn)識(shí)到，讓國(guó)家強(qiáng)盛的重要角色，就是我們---那好似噴薄的朝陽(yáng)的莘莘學(xué)子---正是我們的強(qiáng)弱，決定著祖國(guó)的未來。正所謂梁?jiǎn)⒊f的“少年強(qiáng)則國(guó)強(qiáng)”，確實(shí)不錯(cuò)。殊不知，在廣大學(xué)子背后，還有一位重要角色，那，就是像蠟燭一樣，燃燒自己，照亮別人，默默奉獻(xiàn)的老師們。在一定程度上，好老師決定好學(xué)生。所以，師資力量和教育質(zhì)量也同樣重要。作為一名學(xué)生，我多么希望有一個(gè)好老師�。∧敲�，我心目中的好老師是什么樣子的呢？
首先，一名好老師應(yīng)該擁有淵博的知識(shí),更重要的是將課講活﹑講精、講好。一名語(yǔ)文老師，應(yīng)該詩(shī)詞歷史，寫作閱讀，無(wú)所不通，無(wú)所不知。一名數(shù)學(xué)老師，應(yīng)該將奧數(shù)幾何，各種運(yùn)算，運(yùn)用自如。一名英語(yǔ)老師，應(yīng)該說一口純正英語(yǔ)，與外國(guó)人輕松交談�，F(xiàn)在的許多老師講課都有些枯燥古板，甚至學(xué)生會(huì)因?yàn)槔蠋煹膰?yán)厲呆板而失去了一個(gè)孩子應(yīng)有的活潑與想象力，也變得呆板起來，或失去學(xué)習(xí)的興趣。那么，一個(gè)好老師就應(yīng)該和學(xué)生之間拉近距離，平易近人，成為學(xué)生的良師益友：在課堂上激情澎湃、充滿感情﹑身臨其境地
給學(xué)生講課：激動(dòng)時(shí)手舞足蹈,感動(dòng)時(shí)淚流滿面；好笑時(shí)忍俊不禁,感慨時(shí)長(zhǎng)篇大論；和學(xué)生一起在課文的浪起浪落中隨波遨游,品味課文的苦辣酸甜,感受文章的真諦與樂趣將課講活﹑講精、講好；盡量和學(xué)生互動(dòng)學(xué)習(xí)，讓學(xué)生帶有感情地上課，身臨其境地去學(xué)習(xí)，在學(xué)中玩，玩中學(xué)；當(dāng)學(xué)生對(duì)上課產(chǎn)生興趣時(shí)，往往能產(chǎn)生事半功倍的效果。而這，就是一個(gè)好老師應(yīng)該做到的第一點(diǎn)。
一個(gè)好老師不僅要擁有淵博的知識(shí),將課講活﹑講精、講好，還要有高尚的師德。的確，一個(gè)老師的師德將會(huì)影響一個(gè)學(xué)生的思想。一位好老師，就應(yīng)該抓住生活課文中的一點(diǎn)一滴的小事，借機(jī)把好的思想傳輸給學(xué)生，將會(huì)使學(xué)生終生受益。當(dāng)看見受傷的小動(dòng)物時(shí)，就應(yīng)該教育學(xué)生：要愛護(hù)動(dòng)物；當(dāng)看到有人破壞花草樹木時(shí),就應(yīng)該教育學(xué)生:要愛戶花草樹木；當(dāng)看到有人亂扔垃圾時(shí),應(yīng)當(dāng)教育學(xué)生；要保護(hù)我們賴以生存的地球的環(huán)境。在學(xué)課文的時(shí)候,譬如講到《自己的花是讓別人看的》一課時(shí),應(yīng)不失時(shí)機(jī)地教育學(xué)子：要學(xué)會(huì)“人人為我,我為人人”的品質(zhì)；講到《金錢的魔力》一文,老師又應(yīng)及時(shí)地告誡學(xué)生:千萬(wàn)不要像托德與老板那樣有著見錢眼開的丑態(tài),不要為金錢所動(dòng)……當(dāng)然,不僅要教育學(xué)生,老師自己也要做出榜樣。例如:當(dāng)大家在班級(jí)大掃除中都干得有氣無(wú)力時(shí)，老師帶頭大干起來，揮如汗雨---用自己的實(shí)際行動(dòng)來打動(dòng)我們、鼓勵(lì)我們；再如：當(dāng)大家在街上看
見殘疾人乞討而冷冰冰不予理睬時(shí)，老師上前去，用同情與憐憫的目光看他一眼，用手遞上一張大鈔---用自己的行動(dòng)去感化學(xué)生心靈中的角落，教育他們成為一個(gè)真善美的好少年……
現(xiàn)在，不少教師經(jīng)常體罰或破口大罵一些犯錯(cuò)誤及成績(jī)不太好的同學(xué)�？吹缴磉叞l(fā)生的一個(gè)個(gè)典型事例，我十分痛心，并堅(jiān)決反對(duì)這種做法。我認(rèn)為，真正的教育不是對(duì)學(xué)生體罰或破口大罵，這是一種能深深刺痛孩童們的心的'做法。遭受了這樣“待遇”的同學(xué)們，不僅會(huì)心情愈來愈低落，對(duì)學(xué)習(xí)的興趣也會(huì)越來越低……這種狀況發(fā)展到最后，就會(huì)對(duì)這些莘莘學(xué)子們---甚至是祖國(guó)的未來---產(chǎn)生不良的影響。所以，我認(rèn)為，一個(gè)好老師在學(xué)生成績(jī)不好或犯錯(cuò)的時(shí)候，應(yīng)該親切地去鼓勵(lì)他，指出他的錯(cuò)誤在哪，接著，以足夠的耐心，幫助他改正錯(cuò)誤---而不是以體罰或破口大罵的方式。長(zhǎng)此以來，學(xué)生不僅提高了自信心，還提高了成績(jī)---真是一舉兩得��！
…… 現(xiàn)在，是充滿生氣的20xx年。在這一年里，主席曾發(fā)表了這一段令人深思的教導(dǎo)：“實(shí)現(xiàn)中國(guó)夢(mèng)必須走中國(guó)道路，這就是中國(guó)特色社會(huì)主義道路。這條道路來之不易。它是在改革開放30多年的偉大實(shí)踐中走出來的，是在中華人民共和國(guó)成立60多年的持續(xù)探索中走出來的，是在對(duì)近代以
來170多年中華民族發(fā)展歷程的深刻總結(jié)中走出來的，是在對(duì)中華民族5000多年悠久文明的傳承中走出來的，具有深厚的歷史淵源和廣泛的現(xiàn)實(shí)基礎(chǔ)。中華民族是具有非凡創(chuàng)造力的民族，我們創(chuàng)造了偉大的中華文明，我們也能夠繼續(xù)拓展和走好適合中國(guó)國(guó)情的發(fā)展道路。全國(guó)各族人民一定要增強(qiáng)對(duì)中國(guó)特色社會(huì)主義的理論自信、道路自信、制度自信，堅(jiān)定不移沿著正確的中國(guó)道路奮勇前進(jìn)。 “實(shí)現(xiàn)中國(guó)夢(mèng)必須弘揚(yáng)中國(guó)精神。這就是以愛國(guó)主義為核心的民族精神，以改革創(chuàng)新為核心的時(shí)代精神。這種精神是凝心聚力的興國(guó)之魂、強(qiáng)國(guó)之魂。愛國(guó)主義始終是把中華民族堅(jiān)強(qiáng)團(tuán)結(jié)在一起的精神力量，改革創(chuàng)新始終是鞭策我們?cè)诟母镩_放中與時(shí)俱進(jìn)的精神力量。全國(guó)各族人民一定要弘揚(yáng)偉大的民族精神和時(shí)代精神，不斷增強(qiáng)團(tuán)結(jié)一心的精神紐帶、自強(qiáng)不息的精神動(dòng)力，永遠(yuǎn)朝氣蓬勃邁向未來。 “實(shí)現(xiàn)中國(guó)夢(mèng)必須凝聚中國(guó)力量，這就是中國(guó)各族人民大團(tuán)結(jié)的力量。中國(guó)夢(mèng)是民族的夢(mèng)。也是每個(gè)中國(guó)人的夢(mèng)。只要我們緊密團(tuán)結(jié)，萬(wàn)眾一心，為實(shí)現(xiàn)共同夢(mèng)想而奮斗，實(shí)現(xiàn)夢(mèng)想的力量就無(wú)比強(qiáng)大，我們每個(gè)人為實(shí)現(xiàn)自己夢(mèng)想的努力就擁有廣闊的空間。生活在我們偉大祖國(guó)和偉大時(shí)代的中國(guó)人民，共同享有人生出彩的機(jī)會(huì)，共同享有夢(mèng)想成真的機(jī)會(huì)，共同享有同祖國(guó)和時(shí)代一起成長(zhǎng)與進(jìn)步的機(jī)會(huì)。有夢(mèng)想，有機(jī)會(huì)，有奮斗，一切美好的東西都能夠創(chuàng)造出來的。全國(guó)
